  Emily Dickinson (1830-1886)

A little Madness in the Spring
Is wholesome even for the King,
But God be with the Clown –
Who ponders this tremendous scene –
This whole Experiment of Green –
As if it were his own!

The above poem was written c.1875, and first published in 1914. Using Johnson's ordering, it is number 1333. It can be found, for example, in:
  • Dickinson, Emily. The Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson. Thomas H. Johnson, ed. Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1960.
  • Klein, Patricia S., ed. Random House Treasury of Year-Round Poems. New York: Random House, 2006.
